DIY Business Websites.
Do-It-Yourself. There are so many options around now and it seems like the best way to get your business off the ground on a limited budget. But, nothing is a simple as it seems.
When it comes to a website, it is always best to get professional advice and help when building it to ensure you are going to end up with an awesome product.
Many an entrepreneur in the making have made the same mistakes we are going to list below, so get ahead of the game and avoid making the same mistakes on your new website.
Here are our top 5 Mistakes made on DIY Business Websites :
1. MOBILE FRIENDLY:
If your website or template is not mobile friendly, don’t even bother!
In 2015, Google adjusted their algorithm to incorporate how responsive a website is on different devices.
If your website is not responsive it will not be compatible with mobile devices such as mobile phones and tablets.
This will affect your Google ranking as well as 90% of your potential traffic! Make sure your website will adjust to all devices so it will look clean and user-friendly to all your users.
2. SLOW LOADING WIDGETS:
If you are building your new website on WordPress, you will be excited by all the widgets and plugins you can add to your site.
But be careful with adding too many and be selective with what you choose.
For example, having social media icons across your site might look great, but so you really need them. If your content on those sites is not engaging or high quality, do you really want it to be your sites main feature.
Also, widgets are created by third parties, so be careful when selecting as this can cause slow loading times on your website, error messages or even security threats, all of which will affect your users experience on your site.
3. LARGE FILES:
Websites are designed to load fast, in a day and age where people are busier than ever, no one has time to sit and wait for a website to load.
If your website is image and file heavy, be sure to compress your files to make them quicker to load. An image that is 3MB will look great, but it will take a long time to load on most devices, causing people to abandon the search. By compressing your images you can still keep the quality pixels high, whilst increasing the load time.
Just be sure not to compress them too much as this will make them small and you will lose quality and effect.
4. BUSY WEBSITE AND HOMEPAGE:
It can be tempting to put everything all onto your homepage, after all, this is what people will see when they land on your website.
But too much information in one spot can be information overload and cause people to become confused and abandon their search. Keep your homepage sleek, clean and focus on how you can help the user now they have found your site. A few tempting images are good to showcase your products if you are a product based business and then draw the customer into your site. Just like reading a resume, people will decide if you are the right person for them in 10 seconds, so make a good impression. Look at your website from the view of the customer.
5. CATERING FOR EVERYONE:
You may think that if you can target a wider audience, then you will have a better chance succeeding, but that is actually not the case.
Sometimes a little bit of everything can get confusing and turn everyone off, leaving you with a lonely website. Pick a niche within your market, research how your product can solve a problem for your customer and focus on delivering that product well.
You may narrow your audience, but you will have an engaged audience who will turn to you as their subject matter expert, therefore increasing your business prospects.
Building DIY Business Websites can seem daunting, and it is! But your research, and engaging the right professionals to help you and applying learning from the mistakes of others can certainly help ease the stress and point you in the right direction.
