TikTok's New AI Checkout: What It Means for Your Shop
TikTok just gave shoppers a way to buy straight from the feed, no tapping through to a website. If you sell through TikTok, or you are thinking about starting, here is what actually changed.

On 5 October 2026, at Advertising Week New York, TikTok announced two new shopping features: Buy Direct, a one-click in-app checkout, and Shopping Assistant, a conversational AI that answers product questions without you lifting a finger. Together, TikTok is calling this its "Agentic Commerce" push, and it is worth five minutes of your attention if you sell, or are thinking about selling, through social video. (If the backend side of running a store, payments, inventory, order tracking, ever starts to feel bigger than templates can handle, that is when it is worth talking to a proper web development team at YuSMP. For most sellers starting out, though, the built-in tools are plenty.)
What Buy Direct Actually Does
Buy Direct lets a shopper tap a product in their For You feed and complete the purchase right there, using a payment method and address already saved in the app. There is no redirect to an external website and no separate checkout page to load. TikTok built the backend for this with established commerce and payment partners, including Shopify, Salesforce, Shoplazza and Stripe, so if you already sell through Shopify, this plugs into infrastructure you may already be using.
For a shopper, this removes the single biggest reason people abandon a purchase: friction. For a seller, it means fewer taps between someone seeing your product and someone paying for it.
Why This Matters If You Sell From Home
- Fewer steps between a scroll-stopping video and an actual sale, which matters most for impulse-buy and gift-style products.
- No separate website checkout to maintain or troubleshoot for TikTok traffic specifically.
- Saved payment details mean returning customers can rebuy almost instantly.
What Shopping Assistant Does
Shopping Assistant is a chat window that appears on a merchant's product page inside TikTok's in-app browser. Shoppers can ask it real questions, sizing, shipping times, whether something is in stock, and it answers using information the merchant has provided, in a genuine back-and-forth conversation rather than a static FAQ list.
In practice, that means some of the questions you would normally field yourself through comments or DMs, "does this run small?", "how long is shipping?", get answered automatically, at any hour, without you having to be online.
How Big Is TikTok Shop Already
This rollout is not happening on a small platform. TikTok Shop's US marketplace now has around 215,000 active sellers earning under $15 million a year in revenue, up 25% year over year, and small businesses on the platform have seen a collective 66% jump in sales over the past year, according to a GlobalData research report. If you have been on the fence about whether social selling is worth the setup time, that growth curve is part of the answer.
What's Still Limited
A few things to know before you get too excited:
- Both features are rolling out through eligibility-based advertiser testing, not to every seller at once, so you may not see them in your account yet.
- Buy Direct currently works through the backend partners TikTok has onboarded; if your store runs on a platform outside that list, you may be waiting a bit longer for full support.
- Shopping Assistant only knows what you have told it, so the quality of its answers depends on how complete your product information already is.
What To Do About It Now
You do not need to change anything about your products today. What is worth doing is making sure your product descriptions, sizing details and shipping information are genuinely complete and accurate wherever you sell, because that is exactly the information an AI assistant will lean on when a shopper asks. Tidy, specific product copy was always good practice; it is about to start doing double duty as training material for the bot answering questions on your behalf.
