Shopify Will Start Taxing Return Shipping Fees From Oct 23

A small but real change to how Shopify calculates tax on returns lands this week. If you ship to US customers, it is worth two minutes to check whether it affects you.

Starting 23 October 2026, Shopify is changing how tax gets calculated on returns. If a customer pays a return shipping fee and you use Shopify Tax or Tax Platform to handle US sales tax, that fee will now be taxed automatically, the same way your regular shipping charges already are. It sounds like a tiny plumbing change, and mostly it is, but it is the kind of thing that is easy to miss until a customer emails asking why their refund looks different than expected.

What Is Actually Changing

Right now, when Shopify calculates tax on an order, shipping charges get taxed according to your state's rules, same as it has for years. Return shipping fees, though, have sat slightly outside that system. From 23 October, Shopify closes that gap: when you process a return and charge the customer for return shipping, Shopify will calculate and apply tax on that fee the same way it does for outbound shipping, and the amount will show up automatically in your tax reports.

You will see the estimated tax the moment you create the return, and the final figure gets recorded once you process it. Nothing extra to set up. If your state already treats shipping as untaxed, return shipping in that state stays untaxed too, the rule just extends your existing settings to cover returns.

Who This Actually Affects

  • You sell to US customers and charge for return shipping (rather than offering free or prepaid returns).
  • You use Shopify Tax or Shopify's Tax Platform to manage sales tax, instead of a separate app.
  • You, or your bookkeeper, have ever manually added tax to return shipping fees to work around the old gap.

If none of that describes your store, in other words you offer free returns, or a third-party tax app already handles everything, this update will not change anything you need to do.

The One Thing Worth Checking Before Oct 23

If you or your accountant built a manual workaround to calculate, collect, or reconcile tax on return shipping, because the old system did not do it for you, that workaround is about to start double-counting. Shopify will apply its own tax automatically going forward, so any manual addition on top of that will overstate what the customer actually owes. The fix is simple: open your return process, check whether anyone has been manually adding tax to return shipping, and switch that step off before the 23rd.

For most mums running a lean one-person shop, this is a five-minute job, not a project. Check your return and refund settings, check in with your bookkeeper if someone else handles your tax filings, and you are done.

Why Shopify Is Doing This Now

It fits a pattern worth knowing about: tax authorities have been tightening how online platforms report shipping-related charges, and marketplaces have been closing small compliance gaps one at a time rather than waiting for a bigger overhaul. Shopify has made several tax-adjacent changes through 2026, this is simply the latest, and it is a genuinely minor one as these things go.

If return shipping tax is the kind of detail that makes your eyes glaze over, that is exactly the sort of thing a store built properly from day one is designed to stay on top of quietly, without you having to track every platform changelog yourself.

What To Do This Week

  1. Check if you charge customers for return shipping. If you do not, skip the rest.
  2. Confirm you use Shopify Tax or Tax Platform (check Settings > Taxes and duties).
  3. Look for any manual tax step in your return process and turn it off before Oct 23.
  4. If someone else does your books, send them a one-line heads-up about the change.

That is genuinely the whole task. No new app, no settings to configure, just one thing to double-check before the date passes.
