Tell us a bit about you?
Hi, my name is Helen Sarlamis and I am a mother of two young daughters and wife to Theo. Eva is three and a half years old and Penelope is one and a half years old. I am a Mathematics High School Teacher by trade and have been so for over 10 years. I am a big believer in love, kindness and giving and live life accordingly.
Tell me a bit about what you were doing before you got in contact with Business Jump?
I had just gone back to work after the birth of my second child. Penelope was only six months old when I started back in my coordinators position full time. I had no idea but my life would spiral out of control quickly upon my return to work. I was not feeling right and after much encouragement, I went to the GP. I was then diagnosed with depression, anxiety and insomnia. I would get much worse before I got any better. I took leave from work to recover and during this time of recovery and a lot of soul searching as to what I wanted my future to look like, I came across Business Jump.
Why did you want to start your own business, what is your why?
I wanted to start my own business because I wanted the freedom that I had so longed for in my life. I wanted to live a life that was not dictated by bells but dictated by the choices I made. I wanted to make a better life for myself on my terms and no one else’s. My why of course is my children and to live a life of choice.
How long had you wanted to start a business before you actually took action and took the
While I was teaching, I was running a home cake business which I really enjoyed for a few years before I had children. My aunt and I had always talked about opening a café one day as our family are great cooks. So, I think the seed of starting a business was planted for a long time before I took it seriously. I would say I was thinking about it for years until I actually made the huge jump!
If you hadn’t of started your own business what do you think you’d be doing right now?
I would still be feeling extremely lost in my life’s journey. I think I would still be in a very bad state mentally and health overall. I think starting my own business during my time of recovery and recouping, has given my life a new purpose.
What have you done differently because of Business Jump that you wouldn’t have done if
Most if not all of my processes. I came to Business Jump with zero official business knowledge and they provided everything I needed to know to make a strong start. From helping me with what steps to take to properly register my business and domain name to working out the backend of my website. The knowledge imparted was invaluable.
Tell us about your business?
Little Kid Nation is an online marketplace for children’s goods, from clothes to decore and gifts. I am a huge supporter of small business, so wanted a platform to be able to showcase these small businesses. It is also a platform that I hope will help parents navigate parenthood, through my blogs which talks about issues affecting parenthood. I also enjoy discussing things about play and lifestyle and of course micro fashion. My hope is to build it up to a home base for parents to find support, to do some awesome browsing for funky and unique children’s goods and a safe place to find support.
How did it feel when you got the reins to your business to take out into the world?
Not going to lie, I was petrified!!!! It was all so new. However, the support network that Business Jump gives after handover and in their facebook group is great. I always had a safety net of wonderful women in business to help me.
How many hours a week do you work on your business?
I always try and aim to do a few hours a day at least. I am a stay at home mum for now and so I need to juggle the kids and home life on top of running the business. The beauty of owning my own business is that the time that I do spend working in the business is up to me. If I know I will be busy during the day then when the kids go to bed a night, I will spend a couple of hours then. If I am able to work during the day then I will.
What are some of your most special ‘business wins’ you’ve had to date?
1. Being featured in Kidspot with a blog I wrote for them with backlinks to my website.
2. Reaching over 1000 likes and follows on both Facebook and Instagram.
Where do you want to be in 5 years?
I want to be in a very stable position with my business and to have built a strong community around Little Kid Nation. I also want to be at a stage where I will be able to give back to the community through my business. I want to have a life that is made by my own choices and to be able to be there for my children.
What is one piece of advice you’d give to someone thinking about starting their business?
Surround yourself with strong likeminded people who will understand your struggles in business and who will also be there to celebrate your wins.
